About Shaheed Bijender Singh

On the morning of December 13, 2001, the Indian Parliament was in session when the calm was shattered by gunfire. A white Ambassador car with fake Parliament stickers crashed through the gates—five heavily armed terrorists had arrived to strike at the heart of Indian democracy.

Among those guarding the complex was Constable Bijender Singh, a former Army man now serving in the Delhi Police and assigned to protect the Vice President of India. The moment he sensed danger, Bijender sprang into action. He was the first to confront the attackers, engaging them head-on even as bullets tore through the air.

Shot in the chest during the fierce exchange, he refused to fall back—firing at the assailants and saving two lives by diverting their attack. His quick action gave fellow security personnel the crucial seconds needed to secure the Vice President and contain the assault.

The Parliament attack lasted just 17 minutes, but it could have been a national tragedy. Thanks to heroes like Bijender Singh, the nation’s democracy stood unbroken. His courage remains a shining reminder of what it means to serve—and to stand fearless when the nation needs you most.
