On 3 July 2009, 22-year-old Ranveer Singh, a management student from Ghaziabad, was shot dead in a fake police encounter in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Police had falsely accused him of being involved in criminal activity. The case sparked widespread outrage, and later investigations by the CBI revealed that the encounter was staged. In 2014, a CBI court convicted 18 policemen for his killing, marking it as one of the rare cases where a large group of police personnel was found guilty of a fake encounter.
