Chandan Gupta murder case
About Chandan Gupta murder case
On 26th January 2018, Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh witnessed a tragic and violent turn of events during what was meant to be a patriotic celebration. Chandan Gupta, a young man, was participating in a “Tiranga Yatra” — a bike rally organised by members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, and Hindu Yuva Vahini to mark India’s 69th Republic Day.
The rally, intended to display national pride, instead became a flashpoint for communal violence. Amid escalating tensions, Chandan Gupta was shot dead, sparking outrage across the state and the country. His murder was seen not only as a heinous act of violence but also as an attack on the spirit of national unity that Republic Day symbolises.
The case was taken up with urgency, and in a significant legal milestone, the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi, functioning as a Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court in Lucknow, delivered a landmark verdict. After years of investigation and trial, the court sentenced 28 individuals to life imprisonment for their role in Chandan Gupta’s killing.
